Introduction

After years of continued growth and ever increasing profits HTC was hit hard by its failures last year after it flooded the market with a number of ordinary android phones each indistinguishable from the last. Two thousand and twelve therefore marks a new Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) filled beginning for HTC as they attempt to wrestle back the initiative from Samsung, the Galaxy SII and incoming SIII. The HTC One X is the flagship phone in HTC's One family spearheading its planned revival and is certainly a piece of hardware to rival the very best smartphones on the market, let alone the best android phones.

HTC's devices have exuded stunning build quality ever since the unibody HTC legend was released in 2010 and the One X is no exception to rule. In this instance HTC has left behind the aluminium unibodies of the Legend and Desire HD and has outfitted the One X with a polycarbonate unibody like the one recently seen on the Nokia Lumia 800/900. While you may at first think that polycarbonate unibody is just a marketing term for plastic be rest assured that this isn't the sort of plastic you might find in a sub £150 device. Instead the One X is covered by a high quality soft touch back with glossy yet still extremely high quality plastic. Indeed during the review no creaking was noticed at all. On the left hand side of the device you will find a micro usb charge/sync port and on the right hand side there is just a solitary volume rocker. On the top of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack, access to the Micro SIM slot and the power button. Being a 5.3 inch device people with smaller hands might have preferred HTC to place the power button of the side of the device like on Samsung's Galaxy SII, although personally we found after a little bit of use it wasn't too much of an inconvenience. The 4.7 inch (1280x720) screen is covered in gorilla glass and inside the phone is NVIDIA's brand new Tegra 3 quad core chip. Finally a slightly negative note is that there is no slot for expandable memory so users are stuck with the 32gb of on-board storage (along with 25gb of dropbox cloud storage).




Display

The display is arguably the crown jewel in the HTC One X presenting incredibly crisp images all in stunning 720p. The display measures 4.7 inches and certainly represents the outer-limit we would be willing to accept on a smartphone. Compared to the iPhone 4 the display is absolutely huge and certainly takes some getting used to. The benefits to web-browsing, games and videos swiftly become apparent, however, and if you think you can live with such a large phone then you won't be disappointed with the added real estate such a large, high resolution display provides. The One X is not the first phone to use a 720p display, the Galaxy Nexus also used one, but unlike the Galaxy Nexus it is a SLCD2 display not pentile. Pentile has become increasingly synonymous with grainy images due to its pixel arrangement and while these deficiencies may have been blown slightly out of proportion the One X's display contains none of these problems. Viewing angles were extraordinarily wide with only a slight loss in brightness noticeable. Blacks were deep and whites were especially vibrant and lacked the greyness often displayed in the Galaxy Nexus display. Overall the One X's display has certainly set a new benchmark in mobile phone displays and after Samsung announced that the SIII will also come with a pentile display it looks like we will have to wait until the iPhone 5 to see a rival to this display.





Camera

When HTC launched the One X one of the areas it was clear that they had paid the most amount of attention to was the camera. The camera is an 8MP shooter with an F2.0 28mm lens and while the images it produces are vibrant they lack some sharpness. It is certainly the best camera that HTC has produced but isn't necessarily the huge leap forward HTC had us thinking it would be. More impressive, however, is the actual suite of software that HTC has provided when using the camera. It is possible to edit ISO, white balance and even add filters similar to those on instagram. Finally HTC has also provided the camera with an excellent burst mode as well as the ability to take still shots while at the same time recording video. Overall the camera is good but not excellent and although HTC's software is very promising there could still be improvements to both the lens and software.


























Battery Life and Call Quality

Having such a large high resolution display certainly takes its toll on battery life and while the average user might find the 1800mAh battery to be adequate, power users may wish that HTC had either included a removable battery or a larger, 2100mAh battery as seen in the upcoming Galaxy SIII. With mid to high levels of usage the phone is just about able to get through the day with wi-fi and push emails turned on. Gaming and watching videos severely depleted the battery, however. A fifteen minute game of Temple Run, including a high score of 1,107,666, on medium brightness depleted the battery 10%. Therefore as long as you are not wanting to constantly play 3D mobile games or watch videos the One X's battery is perfectly capable of getting you through a day of emails and light browsing. It still would have been nice to have a slightly larger battery though.

Regarding audio quality the One X is excellent with calls coming through the speakers very clearly and people able to understand us with ease. Although many manufacturers seem to fall down on this area these days the One X merely produced the sort of call quality we expect from a flagship phone.




Performance and benchmarks


Apart from the display the other area that stands out on the One X's spec sheet is Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad core processor. Previously only seen in Asus's Transformer Prime, Tegra 3 is Nvidia's latest mobile cpu and the first quad core mobile cpu to reach the market. The most important question though is what does that mean in practice. You'll be pleased to know that the processor performs exactly as you would expect. Sense 4.0 flies under the finger with apps opening extremely fast and even the most intensive games, such as those found in Nvidia's tegra zone run without a hitch. Rapidly flicking between home screens on previous HTC devices was both slow and cumbersome yet on the One X there were no such problems. Although this probably has as much to do with HTC's newest skin as much as the processor itself.

While performance in everyday usage is exactly what you would expect the benchmarks showed that while the Tegra 3 is certainly fast it isn't as big of a leap forward as you might expect compared to some of the newer dual cores entering the market such as the Snapdragon s4 found in the US version of the One X. The Quadrant benchmark returned an average score of 4,573 with a top score out 4880. In smartbench 2012 the average score in the productivity index was 4610 with a high score of 4682. On the gaming index of smartbench the average score we got was 2707 and a high score of 2722.






Sense 4.0

Many people who heard HTC was shipping the One X with Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) would have let out a collective sigh when it was also announced that upon ICS would be HTC's sense skin. While HTC may have aided user experience with its skins back in the days of Froyo, Android has improved dramatically since then to the extent that HTC's skin upon its gingerbread devices was actually a detraction rather than a selling point. Thankfully HTC has remedied this problem for the most part with Sense 4.0 proving to be only a light skin. Whether or not Sense 4.0 actually a benefit is debatable but we found that it certainly did not take anything away from the device. Gone are the overly laborious animations replaced by a simple change to the next homescreen. Even HTC's famous weather widget has been toned down slightly so that it is less intrusive. Android purists will no doubt still bemoan the fact manufacturers still feel the need to add skins to their devices. Thankfully in the One X's case the skin is light enough not to ruin the experience although if we are honest it would be nice to see a uniform android experience pushed by Google such as that of the Galaxy Nexus.




Conclusion

The One X is a sparkling return to the top of the smartphone market for HTC and should certainly be considered when looking for a new phone. We would say that currently it is the top android phone on the market with excellent design and build quality. Battery life is a slight concern although certainly in no way a deal breaker especially when performance and the display are so good. It would also be nice to see manufacturers stop loading their skins atop of android although in this case Sense 4.0 is a much more simplistic skin that doesn't detract from the phone itself.

Don't get rid of your leather wallet yet: A year on from Google Wallet


It's been a year since Google unveiled Google Wallet to the world and five months since Google declared that it wanted Google Wallet to play a major role in the 2012 Olympics. Yet a year on Google still doesn't look as if it is in a better position to bring contactless payments to the masses. In December of last year Google announced that it wanted to get its virtual wallet app usable and fully functional for the London Olympics in 2012. Google envisaged a system by which items could be paid for without the use of a credit card and instead via a contactless transmission from your phone to a system by the checkout similar to that found in Starbucks. While Google Wallet may have stalled the vision of a wallet-less society is closer than it was a year ago, along with all the benefits and problems associated with such a system.

Google had hoped that the London Olympics would be the perfect test venue for its burgeoning platform but problems with banks and vendors has caused the idea of it being one of the main ways of purchasing items at the Olympics to be postponed. Both Visa and Mastercard have also entered the race to develop a contactless mobile payment system and problems with developing an all encompassing system for mobile payments being resolved, albeit very slowly, the future of a wallet-less society could be with us sooner than you think.



NFC and Implementation


Google Wallet is Google's name for its contactless mobile payment method that works via NFC. NFC stands for near field communications and is something that is slowly being introduced into flagship phones around the world. The brand new HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy SIII for example both have inbuilt NFC. NFC allows information to be transferred without contact between phones and in Google Wallet's case a payment module that you can just tap your phone against. Google's idea and one that has been taken up by other companies is to store your credit card data on your phone and thus discard your wallet in favour of a simple, quick and easy to use payment system. Or as Google puts it, “so that the only plastic you'll need is your phone”.

Indeed Google Wallet has already been introduced to some retailers in the United States and allows users to simply tap their phone to pay for items. GAP and Footlocker are already partnered retailers of the scheme with Google saying that Google Wallet will soon be able to be used in Subway.



Less time Queuing, more time enjoying life

It is not hard to see the benefits of a world in which we only need to carry around a mobile phone. Not only would Google Wallet allow us to leave our leather wallets at home and thus allow us to carry round one less item to lose but it also has the potential to speed up paying for items. While the English may be famous for their love of queuing not all nationalities have such a disposition to standing in line. Just tapping your phone on a payment system would produce a near instantaneous method by which to pay for your shopping leaving you more time to enjoy other things in life. Unless you're English of course, then maybe you'll shun Google Wallet simply to enjoy a good old queue.


Security, Limited Reach and Pay Pal

While the benefits of carrying around less and being able to spend more time away from queues may be appealing there are certainly issues that have arisen over the past year that need to be addressed before we will be able to walk into any shop and simply tap our phones to pay.

The first question many people ask when told about this sort of payment method is, is it secure? The security of wallet-less payment has been something that Google, Visa and Mastercard have all been extremely keen to stress is paramount and while there are of course always inherent dangers with any sort of payment methods Google believes that it is safer than actually using a physical credit card. According to Google there are four methods they have implemented in order to keep your payment information. Two are traditional lock screens one for the phone and one specifically for Google Wallet itself. Furthermore Google has stressed that unlike a credit card there is no account information displayed on the phone. Finally all android phones capable of using Google Wallet have a separate chip that encrypts and stores your credit information. While all of these methods certainly seem as though they make Google Wallet just as secure, if not more so than the traditional credit card Google, Visa and Mastercard will have a tough time convincing the less tech savy amongst the population to subscribe to a payment method without paper or cards.


A second problem for Google is that its payment system requires an NFC equipped mobile device. Not only are devices that currently contain NFC limited to the high end of the mobile phone market but they also require users to understand that their phone is equipped with NFC. It is likely that many of the people who own NFC capable devices have no idea that they do or what NFC is. Until NFC is spread more widely in both terms of devices sold but also in the public’s consciousness Google is going to struggle to gain traction in the market.


Indeed a greater problem for Google is that Pay Pal seem to have an answer to this problem already and it doesn't involve NFC. Instead Pay Pal have launched an initiative whereby users are able to pay items in shops such as Abercrombie and Fitch by linking their pay pal account to their mobile number and are therefore able to pay for items using their mobile number and a pin. While not quite as convenient as Google Wallet it is a system that doesn't rely on a high end phone yet still allows users to leave their wallet at home. While this system is of course only limited to Pay Pal accounts at the moment there is no reason why such a system couldn't be used by credit card companies.




Contactless payment is the future, The unknown is how

There is no doubt that contactless payment is the future of paying for items in retail shops. With major companies such as Visa and Mastercard along with Google designating millions of dollars towards the research and development of this sector of the market it is only a matter of time before people regularly pay for items without their card. However, Google Wallet has shown that there is still a lot of work that needs doing if it is to become the de facto standard by which we pay for items in store. With Pay Pal's own concept clearly proving successful it is up to Google and credit card companies to smooth out the issues holding NFC based initiatives back. Indeed maybe all it will take to really bring contactless NFC enabled payments into the mainstream will be a quick call to Tim Cook at Apple HQ.



Edit: Just after this article was posted it was announced that the Post office in the UK hopes to have 11,500 contactless payment readers in their stores by October of this year. If this role out happens as planned it will become the biggest supporter of the technology in Europe. The readers will support both Visa and Mastercard's competing standards of NFC with both mobile phones and contactless cards listed as a means of payment. Furthermore there will be a maximum restriction on how much you can spend via this contactless method of £20. While this is certainly good news regarding the introduction and spread of NFC payment options it only serves to highlight how Google, especially in the UK, is losing out to the both Mastercard and Visa who have shown that Google Wallet isn't necessary for contactless payments.

4K TV a Resolution Too Far?




The last decade has seen the rise of 1080p or high definition as marketing people like to call it. Yet recently 4k televisions have started to appear at conventions such as CES earlier this year. However, the questions that seem to arise by the arrival of 4k are whether broadcasters are ready and more importantly will the average consumer be able to discern the difference between 4k and 1080p.


What is 4k?

4K is set to be the next resolution leap that our televisions take and is named as such because there are nearly four thousand horizontal pixels across the screen. In fact the resolution of 4K images is 3840 pixels by 2160 pixels (3840x2160). For those of us whose mental arithmetic has declined over the years that amounts over 8million pixels which is four times as many that we now find in our 1080p flat screen televisions. This certainly sounds like a huge step forward, however, it is debatable whether 4K will have as big an impact as the upgrade to high definition has had on the way we consume media.


An Unnecessary Step

There is little doubt that the move from standard definition TVs to high definition ones could be called revolutionary. The clarity of high definition images is so superior that going back to watch a programme in standard definition only serves to emphasise the softness of the image and can even be little jarring. Indeed the richness of colour and clarity in a Blu-ray movie is at times breathtaking. Yet surely this raises the question of whether we actually need 4K. If 1080p Blu-ray movies can cause such amazement do we really need another bump in resolution.

Looking at the state of broadcasting in the UK it certainly doesn't look like it. Earlier this year the UK's television signal went completely digital. While this may have brought with it added content in the form of more channels it didn't bring with it any added clarity. Indeed in order to get HD images on your HDTV your either have to have Freeview HD, Freesat or a subscription service, such as Sky HD. As of February 2012 4million Freeview HD boxes and TVs had been sold with a further 2million Freesat boxes also sold. This amounts to a rather meagre 6million households with access to live, subscription free broadcasts in HD in the UK. Don't be fooled into thinking this means all channels are HD either. Only five channels are available for free in HD on Freesat and Freeview HD. All in all this looks like pretty conclusive evidence that broadcasters still have a long way to go before people can make use of their HDTVs let alone 4K ones.

Not only does the adoption of broadcasts in HD as well as HD capable set-top boxes need to improve before the implementation of 4K but it would also seem that such a resolution on our TVs may be redundant. The average size of a UK television is, according to Recombu, 30.8 inches yet Sharp predicts that by 2015 the average size of a TV will be 60inches. Even if this were the case, which seems doubtful, it is unlikely we would be able to tell the difference in picture quality between a 1080p and 4K television. When LG showed off its 4K television at CES it was a rather magnificent 84inches big. Even for the largest of sitting rooms 84inches is absolutely huge and begs the question of whether the continued growth of televisions can be sustained. Indeed if that is the size that a television needs to be in order to experience 4K in all its glory then it looks like it may be a resolution too far for the average consumer.


Hope for the future

While this may look like there really is no point in 4K televisions it is important to note that 4K is still a long, long way off. Indeed LG's 4K television was as much a proof of concept as it was an example of what to expect in the coming years. It would therefore seem that we are already on the path to 4K but unless broadcasters are more prepared for its arrival than they were with the current 1080p resolution TVs we have today then it seems like a rather needless path to tread. Who knows maybe by 2020 we will be watching 4K television on our wall sized televisions.
