Tips for Building a PC: Part 3-CPUs




Choosing a CPU is not as difficult as it used to be especially at the high end of the market. There are two manufactures of CPUs, Intel and AMD. However, recently AMD has fallen behind Intel in terms of performance and power consumption. This has meant that there is no AMD made CPU that can compete with Intel’s offerings at the mid-range and the enthusiast level. Therefore in this guide we will make suggestions for both AMD and Intel CPUs at the budget price range but once you start spending £140 and over you should really be looking for the performance that Intel CPUs can offer.

CPUs

Before stating our recommendations there are a few things to know about CPUs. The first thing is that the CPU is like the brain of the computer. It is one of the most important parts of the PC and the better the CPU the faster the computer will carry out tasks from gaming to web browsing. CPUs also come with different numbers of cores and threads. The standard core counts of the current generation of processors are dual cores (two cores) and quad cores (four cores). However, while Intel have both dual core and quad core processors AMD has muddied the water in recent times by unveiling a CPU that has eight cores. While this may seem impressive, AMD has changed its definition of what a core is and therefore performance is still not as good as Intel's four core processors. The impact of more cores is still somewhat limited in many applications although some games as well as video rendering programs certainly benefit from having more cores. Thus when looking at processors do not be fooled into thinking that more cores are always better, although with Intel that is often the case. Finally some processors can be overclocked, while others can't. Overclocking is a means of running your CPUs faster in order to gain more performance out of it. Unfortunately overclocking does carry it risks and also requires an aftermarket cooler. Intel's marks its CPUs with a “k” at the end if they can be overclocked whereas all of AMDs FX processors can be overclocked.


Budget: Intel Core i3 2100/ AMD fx 4100:

Selecting a budget CPU like any other component decision, although the point is especially pertinent here, is about the price to performance ratio. The core i3 2100 is excellent CPU for £90. It is a dual core processor and runs at 3.1Ghz. Unfortunately unlike Intel's “k” processors this CPU is unable to be overclocked. Apart from that though there is very little to dislike about core i3 2100. Indeed as a Tom's Hardware article showed it is a better gaming CPU than the FX 4100, although due to it only having two cores it will not be able to match the video rendering and multi core optimised program performance of the AMD FX 4100. However, it must also be noted that on 24th June Intel is set to release its Ivy Bridge core i3 processors. So if you are looking at the budget end of the market then it is probably worth waiting to see what Intel unveils in a weeks time.

The AMD fx 4100 is a quad core processor that runs at 3.6Ghz and for £80 is certainly excellent value. As previously stated it is not quite a match for the core i3 2100 in the gaming stakes although it is overclockable which is a nice feature for those of you hoping to get the most out of your CPU. Secondly being an AM3+ socket CPU, motherboards for this processor are slightly cheaper than for the Intel core i3 2100. Therefore while the processor is only £10 cheaper you may be able to save around £30-£40 overall when you factor in the cost of the motherboard (see part 4). Overall there really isn’t too much difference between the two CPUs. If you want a good gaming processor that will carry out most of the tasks you want then go with the i3 2100. If on the other hand you want to be able to overclock your processor and the more cores are of value to you then the AMD FX 4100 will adequately serve your needs.



Mid-Range : i5 3570k

There is only one option when choosing a mid-range CPU. The £170 Intel core i5 3570k is a quad core Ivy Bridge CPU that is perfect for gaming as well as offering the best performance per core ratio of any Intel CPU. Being a “k” processor the i5 3570k is capable of being overclocked, although if you are going to overclock you really should buy an aftermarket cooler. Intel's Ivy bridge processors also have support for PCI express 3.0, which means if you have a compatible motherboard and are running two or more graphics cards you are unlikely to see performance decreasing due to the bandwidth available to each card. Being one of Intel’s brand new Ivy Bridge CPUs the 3570k also has around 15% better performance than the previous generation as well as using up less power with a TPD of 77w. Running at 3.6Ghz there is little that the 3570k can’t do and while it isn’t quite the best CPU for video editing, for the price it really is unbeatable. Finally it is also nice to see that Intel has kept to the same LGA 1155 socket as the previous generation of processors so if you want you can use your sandy bridge motherboard if you have one. Overall there isn’t much to say about the i5 3570k apart from that if you are looking for a mid-range or gaming CPU the 3570k is a must buy.



Enthusiast: i7 3770k
Like the i5 3570k, the i7 3770k is the only CPU that can be recommended for an enthusiast build. Unless of course you want to spend £1000 instead of the the £260 that the 3770k will set you back. Like the i5 3570k the i7 3770k is a quad core CPU, although it also comes with eight threads which means that it can carry out processes that benefit from having more cores more quickly. This isn't really a benefit to gamers but for those of you who use photoshop regularly as well as edit videos it is certainly going to help to speed up the rendering process. The i7 3770k being a “k” processor is also overclockable if the base clock of 3.5Ghz isn't enough for you already. Indeed the i7 3770k is Intel's top Ivy Bridge processor and while performance is excellent if you don't need the hyperthreading that the 3770k comes with that its probably best to buy the i5 3570k.

Windows 8 and a Form Factor Nobody Wants



It is clear from the Windows 8 release preview that Microsoft is heavily pushing its Metro UI in the hope that it will be able to merge its mobile and desktop operating systems together. Indeed after Computex last week it would seem that this decision has caused manufacturers to create a new form factor, the touchscreen notebook and in extreme cases, such as the ASUS Taichi, a notebook that has dual displays, one to be used as a tablet screen on the outside and another to be used as a traditional laptop display would be. The question that comes to mind when viewing these devices though is whether manufacturers feel as though they are being forced into making touchscreen laptops because this is how best to interact with Windows 8 and if so, will this pose problems for both Microsoft and PC manufacturers.



The introduction of Metro UI

Windows 8 and Microsoft's move towards Metro UI is the biggest departure Microsoft has made from the traditional desktop OS in many years. Not only has it ditched the ubiquitous start button but by introducing the Metro UI previously seen on Windows Phone 7 it is hoping that it will be able to merge its desktop, tablet and mobile operating systems together. By doing this, Microsoft believes that it will not only provide a more unified user experience but also encourage developers to create apps that have huge appeal to the millions of people that use Windows across all devices. However, it risks alienating its desktop users and more worryingly also its enterprise customers. While it is impossible to make a judgement on an unfinished product, it is likely that business users would have preferred an evolution on Windows 7 as opposed to the revolution of Windows 8. Although there will be a desktop view similar to Windows 7 they will have to cope without a start button and in Windows 8 some things can only be carried out in the Metro UI. It seems that Microsoft is concentrating on its home users and the idea that this tile based UI will help freshen up Windows and show people that Microsoft not only cares about the desktop but also the tablet and mobile markets as well. Whether or not this has forced manufacturers to produce devices that supposedly play to Windows 8’s strengths is another matter entirely.




 A Form Factor Nobody Wants?

Indeed the decision to produce laptops with touchscreens looks questionable. There is no evidence to suggest that what consumers want are laptops that also have touchscreens. Indeed for many people the two notions should be separate. We enjoy using touchscreens on phones and tablets because they are a convenient way to browse the internet and respond to emails without having the added bulk and size that having a keyboard brings. However, when using a laptop we often do so because we want the keyboard as it increases our productivity compared to a touchscreen. Therefore a laptop with a touchscreen actually seems to offer up functionality that people do not want. Tablets normally come in a slate form factor because that is the easiest way to use them. Having a touchscreen on a laptop is inconvenient due to the angle of the screen which is likely to lead to an uncomfortable experience during long periods of use. Even more worryingly for manufacturers is that having a touchscreen on a laptop will likely increase the price of the device. A touchscreen might be something that consumers do not mind having if they do not have to pay any extra for it but it is unlikely that they would pay for something that is likely to be unwieldy and less convenient than a tablet would be.


Furthermore manufacturers do not seem to know what market they are producing the device for. The ZenBook Prime ultrabook by Asus is looking like the ultrabook to beat when it is released later this year. At Computex Asus announced that both 11” and 13” variants of the device would also be available with touchscreens. However, someone buying this device is unlikely to want to pay extra for the touchscreen. The Prime is a high end device that will likely cost around $800-1000 yet people who buy this sort of device are not the sort to also want a laptop with a touchscreen. For example many people who have bought tablets have done so because they realised that previously they only used their computers to browse the internet and respond to emails. Therefore a tablet is both cheaper than a laptop and also offers up more portability. On the other hand a person who spends $1000 dollars on a laptop does so because they don't want the limited functionality of a touchscreen and instead wants the power and productivity of a laptop. By adding a touchscreen to a device aimed at this sort of consumer you are not adding any sort of value to the product as you are targeting an audience that has deliberately chosen a powerful laptop over a touchscreen as it provides more value to them. This leads us to wonder whether the manufacturers realise this or instead feel the need to build laptops with touchscreens because that is the easiest way to use Windows 8.



An OS Reliant on Touchscreens and Multitouch Trackpads?

Reports have suggested that Metro UI works extremely well with touchscreens and quite well with trackpad gestures. Indeed as a tablet experience Windows 8 looks like it could offer up a serious challenge to Android and iOS. However, by incorporating a tablet interface into the desktop OS Microsoft has forced manufacturers into producing devices that have touchscreens as this is the best way of navigating the OS. Manufacturers either have to add a touchscreen to their device or improve upon their trackpads and driver support. It is likely that a manufacturer would see a touchscreen as a much more appealing feature to a customer than updated multitouch trackpads would be. Thus they have opted for the touchscreen as Windows 8 is best used with either a touchscreen or multitouch trackpad and only one of those options is a clear selling point. If this is the case then it could lead to serious problems for both Microsoft and PC manufacturers. As stated previously people will not want to pay more for a touchscreen if they are already spending a considerable amount of money on the laptop in the first place. These customers will expect to be able to use their PC as they want without the need to buy a touchscreen version. Indeed it may lead these people to reject Microsoft’s new OS if they are unable to navigate it quickly and efficiently, something they have previously been able to do on a traditional laptop.



Failure is Not an Option

It would therefore seem that Microsoft’s gamble has also become a gamble for manufacturers as well. They may see Windows 8 as an opportunity to sell new hardware and promote a new form factor. Unfortunately this looks like a form factor that nobody wants. People looking for a tablet experience will stick to the iPad or even specific Windows 8 tablets. Those people wanting a tablet with the ability to occasionally use it to write longer emails of word documents are likely to be drawn to the Asus Transformer Book. A Windows 8 tablet that also has a keyboard dock much like the Transformer Prime. Finally there are the people who just want a laptop as their sole computing device. They do not want to pay extra for a touchscreen as they would prefer to use a mouse and keyboard. This leaves that touchscreen laptop in an awkward position in the market and could end up with both the failure of these form factors and more worryingly the failure or windows 8. If such a device is needed to use Windows 8 properly then Microsoft has fundamentally failed to successfully revolutionise its operating system. Indeed if it fails it won’t be the only company hit.

Tips for Building a PC: Part 2-Cases




As I said in the first part of this article component choice is one of the most confusing elements of building a PC. In future articles I will outline every component you will need when building a computer along with the different options for each component with budget, mid-range and enthusiast in mind. This part will start with the case.


Cases

Probably the most overlooked “component” when building a computer, the case is actually very important not only because it is the part of the computer you have to look at everyday but also because it has a key part to play in deciding what components to buy. For example a micro atx case will probably be unable to house a large graphics card or hold that many hard drives. On the other hand a full tower case will take up a large amount of room. Case choice is probably one of the harder areas to make suggestions for, as aesthetically every case is different and will appeal to different people. In general though most people will go for a mid-tower case.



Budget: Antec Three Hundred

Made from metal and costing just under £50 the Antec Three Hundred really is the best budget case available today. The front panel contain two USB 2.0 ports as well as space for three 5.25” drive bays. There is also space for six 3.5” hard drives. The case even comes with one 120mm fan and one 140mm fan. All in all it is an excellent case for the price and although you miss out on some high end touches such as anti-noise measures or watercooling friendly features the Antec Three Hundred is certainly the budget case to beat.



Mid-range: Fractal Design Arc Midi

There are an absurd number of cases around the £70-100 range and for this reason it is almost impossible to make a single recommendation for a case in this price bracket. However, at the lowest end of this price spectrum the Fractal design arc midi represents astonishing value for money. I personally have the arc midi and found assembly in the case to be very straightforward. It comes with a couple of front USB 2.0 ports and a USB 3.0 port. Not only that but it has space for two 5.25” drive bays as well as eight 3.5” drive trays. It also comes with three 140mm fans. The fans are of high quality and are relatively quiet. Indeed rarely are so many fans included in a case of this price. Finally it should also be noted that the case is made from steel with a plastic front panel.



Enthusiast: Corsair 600t (mid tower)/ Coolermaster HAF X V2

The Corsair 600t is an ATX/mATX mid tower case that comes in both white and black and costs £130-140. The design of this case is both simple yet beautiful and offers all the features you could want from a case of this price. It comes with both mesh and windowed side panels as well as two 200mm fans. Most cases either come with a couple of 120mm fans or a 140mm fan and so the inclusion of two 200mm fans certainly implies that this is a premium product. It also has space for up to six 3.5” drives along with eight expansion slots. Expansion slots are important as they allow you to have more graphics cards in your system as well as other components that take up PCI express slots such as sound cards. You may not feel you will need so many slots when you are first devising your system but it is important to note that the case is one area of your system that doesn't need updating every year or two and can outlast many different builds. Therefore it is always nice to have the space to expand in the future.


The Coolermaster HAF XV2 is the only full tower on this list and represents great performance in a large and customisable case. Being a full tower case the HAF can fit in it every size of motherboard, although to take advantage of all its features you really should be looking into fitting it with an ATX board. With nine expansion slots and plenty of space for watercooling the HAF exemplifies the features expected in an enthusiast level case. The front panel also includes the most ports of the cases covered. It has two USB 3.0 , two USB 2.0, e-SATA and Firewire ports as well as a microphone and headphone jack. Finally the case includes one 230mm front intake fan, a 200mm roof fan, a 200mm side fan and one 140mm exhaust fan. Overall it is a fantastic case, well worth the £130 price, and although it is probably too large for the average consumer it is well worth considering if you have the money and the space.

Goodbye HDDs, Hello SSDs



The hard disk drive (HDD) has been a crucial component of PCs of all types for the last 50 years. Indeed the first hard drive was developed by IBM in 1956 and ever since its conception prices and physical size have decreased while the capacity of the drives has greatly increased. Two terabyte drives have recently become widely available for around £100 with the first 4TB drive being shipped by Hitachi last year. However, the speed by which hard drive storage can be expanded upon has slowed and with the dropping price of solid state drives we might, after 50 years of dominance, be about to see the death of hard drive for everything but mass storage. Until last year a solid state drive (SSD) was the ultimate sign of a PC enthusiast with prices often reaching £2-3 per GB with that amount getting higher as the capacity increased. Yet in the past week SSD prices have seen a significant drop with a 240GB drive available for £175. That's only 71p per GB, a price that was almost unimaginable two years ago. Indeed signs are pointing to the fact that we might be about to witness the decline of the traditional hard disk drive.



Why Now?

Yet people have predicted the death of the hard drive for years now and every time hard drive manufacturers have found a way to increase capacities and reduce size. So why do I think that in the next year we will see the replacement of hard drives in laptops and in desktops? We will of course see hard drives remain for mass storage but for the average consumer they will become a thing of the past.


Floods and lost sales

The first reason is because of last years floods in Thailand and the large effect in had on hard drive sales. Last year there were serious floods in Thailand that rendered the production facilities of major hard drive manufacturers unusable. This meant that during the Christmas period and even into the new year hard drive prices were at inflated levels. Whereas before the flood a 1TB hard drive cost £60, after it prices were around the £100-120 range. Not only did this result in the loss of sales but more importantly a loss in sales that were translated into SSD sales. For just over £120 you could buy a 120GB SSD. While you would have clearly lost a lot of storage in opting for the SSD you will have gained incredible speed. Christmas is a time when many people would have been updating their systems and it is likely that they opted for an SSD boot drive and waited until hard drive prices lowered. Whereas before the flood they may have been looking to get a HDD boot drive they instead ended up with the much faster SSD instead. It is unlikley that people who bought an SSD would be able to go back to using a HDD and therefore the process by which people moved from using HDDs to SSDs was sped up.



The Emergence of the Cloud

Another reason that HDDs could be said to be on their last knees is due to the ever expanding network of cloud storage. Dropbox, SkyDrive, iCloud and Google Drive all provide cloud storage alternatives to the HDD. This storage obviously comes at a price but brings with it the convenience of being able to access your data almost any time you have access to the internet. Dropbox for example has both a browser app as well as android, iOS and desktop applications. The only problem with cloud storage at the moment is the price per GB ratio. 100GB of storage on Dropbox is $200 a year or $19.99 a month. Thats considerably more that an HDD and is even more expensive than an SSD. Microsoft's SkyDrive offers much more reasonable prices, however. One hundred GB of storage with SkyDrive is only $50 a year. With competition between Google, Microsoftt, Apple and Dropbox set to cause prices to drop further it won't be long before we store most of our information in the cloud.



Prices are Going Down but Capacity is Going Up

As SSD performance improves greatly as the storage capacity increases the ability to have an SSD capable of storing lots of data came at an exorbitant price. Yet the size of SSDs is increasing just as prices are dropping. It won't be long before we see 1TB SSDs on sale. Even though these are likely to be extremely expensive most people will not be looking to purchase a drive with so much capacity. A 256GB SSD is probably big enough for most users as traditional hard drives can still be used to store large amounts of data if you really need them to.



Rise of the Ultrabook and MacBook Air

While Intel's Ultrabook initiative may not have hit the heights Intel and partners would have hoped, Ivy Bridge has signalled a new start for high end ultra-portables. In a device where performance and size are key the SSD provides the ultimate answer to the storage question. SSDs contain no moving parts and are therefore silent, require less power and produce less heat than traditional spinning platter HDDs. All of these things lead them to being the perfect solution for manufacturers looking to produce fast and sleek looking machines. Previously both price and capacity have held SSDs back from being a key component in ultra-portables, but as already stated this is becoming less of an issue and as Intel continues to demand inclusion of SSDs in products under the ultrabook name it looks like traditional hard drives have been relegated to the budget end of the notebook market. As prices continue to fall there will be less and less reason for manufacturers to include HDDs in their devices and as notebook sales far outweigh those of desktops it certainly looks like HDDs are soon to be replaced by SSDs.


Speed, Speed, Speed

Finally and arguably most importantly is the speed of SSDs compared to HDDs. A 7200rpm Seagate barracuda hard drive is advertised as reading data at around 156MB/s. This is compared to a mid range, year old OCZ agility 3 SSD that has advertised read speeds of 525MB/s. This is clearly a huge leap in performance and more importantly relates to real world differences. SSDs cause applications such as microsoft word to open almost instantaneously and cause games to load, in some cases, three times faster than a traditional hard drive allows. Possibly the best benefit to this increased performance is how fast computers boot when the operating system is stored on an SSD. Windows 7 running on a 120GB crucial M4 loads in around 20s although half of that time is the time it takes for the computer to POST. However, unlike booting from a HDD, once windows has loaded on a SSD the computer is completely usable. For instance as soon as you see the home screen you will be able to load up your applications without the wait you normally see when the operating system is stored on a HDD.



Indeed it certainly looks like we may be about to see the death of the hard disk drive, especially in laptops. With the growing popularity of cloud storage consumers no longer seem to need the huge storage capacities that hard drives provide. Instead the huge speed benfits that SSDs provide in comparison to HDDs means that they are quickly becoming the storage option of choice and with SSD prices only getting cheaper manufacturers and consumers alike have a fast SSD filled future to look forward to.

Tips For Building a PC: Part One




With Microsoft and Sony failing to announce any next generation hardware at E3 this year many of you may be thinking about getting a gaming PC as for many people the gaming experience on consoles has fallen substantially in recent years. The Xbox is nearly seven years old and the hardware only runs games at 720p and around 30fps. Indeed this is the same thought process I went through about 8 months ago.

This isn't going to be a guide on how to build a PC but rather it will discuss the concerns many people have before building a PC as well as the thought process I went through when deciding to build a PC. Putting the parts together really isn't that hard but it certainly helps to have some knowledge of what you are doing. In a follow up article there will also be a couple of systems that if I was building a system today I would build.



Expense and Difficulty

Expense and difficulty are the two words that you most often hear when anyone is talking about building a computer, especially a gaming one. There is no doubt that building a computer is more expensive than buying a console but there is a large difference, you can use your PC for lots of other purposes. When I first thought about building a new computer it was actually because my laptop was around four years old and I was fed up of the time it took to open applications and load videos. When looking into the sort of laptop that could do all the things I wanted I found that I would have to spend well over £1000 and even then most laptops have one flaw or another that makes you question whether spending that much money is a good idea. In fact when I looked at building a desktop I found that I could build a top of the range one for about £800. Couple that with a nice monitor and the overall cost was going to be about £1000 yet compared to a laptop, the performance I would be getting was incomparable.

Possibly the most important thing I learnt when building my computer when it comes to expense is to set out the amount of money you want to spend and work around that. As you are buying individual components there is often a better CPU or hard drive for only £20 more. It may make you think, “well why don't I just spend a little bit more and get something better”. Unfortunately if you take this sort of attitude then quickly you'll be spending that little bit more on all your components and you'll have spent an extra £300. Setting a budget and sticking to it is the best way of keeping costs down. Once you've decided you're interested in building a PC you'll probably have the next thought I had. Can I actually build it though?


The wonders of the internet have meant that typing into Google “How to build a computer” comes up with literally thousands if not millions of guides and just like this one most will start by denouncing how difficult it is. Yet when you are thinking about building a computer this really doesn't offer much solace. I wasn't only worried about whether I could build my own PC but also what would I do if something went wrong, would I be spending hundreds of pounds on useless components. Possibly the most useful thing I learnt was how incredible Youtube is as a computer building resource. By watching people build computers you soon learn your SATA III port from you PCI slot. The videos may be long but are more informative then any guide could be. Also don't necessarily just watch “how to build a pc videos”. I found Linus Sebastian's Linus tech tips and Newegg TV extremely useful for just getting an insight into all the different components and what they do. Most importantly don't be put off by your first few articles or videos. By the time I came to building my computer I was pretty confident I could do it with my eyes closed, I knew exactly where everything was meant to go.


But What if Something Goes Wrong?

This leads to the third major concern people have when building a PC, what if something goes wrong. Things probably will go wrong but as long as you have access to the internet, somewhat ironic considering you're building a machine to access the internet, you have nothing to worry about. Within a month my rather expensive graphics card started crashing my computer whenever I loaded up a game. At first I thought it was probably a one off thing. When it persisted my next thought was, “oh no I've broken it”. However, this is where the internet came in handy. There are thousands of forums dedicated to PC problems and solutions. I posted my problem on a couple of forums including Tomshardware.com and within a couple of days I had a response. They said it was probably faulty and I should RMA it. This took about two weeks and I was sent a replacement. My worst fear before building my computer was how was I, someone with little knowledge of computer hardware, going to diagnose the problem if something went wrong. The answer I found was simple, the internet will.


Components

Finally and arguably most importantly, for your wallet at least, is component choice. Once again Youtube is an encyclopedia of knowledge. When I first thought of building a PC I went on a few custom PC websites such as cyberpowersystem.co.uk. I didn't really know what I was doing and my component choices were built solely on the adage, more expensive equals better. Normally in technology this is indeed the case, however, by watching unboxings and reading reviews you quickly learn what is important when building a computer. Before watching videos and reading articles I remember clicking the option to install a case with the maximum amount of fans possible when on cyberpower. After all a cooler computer is a better computer, right? Well not exactly. The more fans you have the more noise is produced and therefore installing fans in your case is all about the best performance to noise ratio.


Another great way of learning about component choice is to go onto a website/forum such as Tomshardware.com. In the forums there are hundreds of new posts everyday of people asking others to critique a system they are about to build. By reading these posts you soon see that there are patterns to the components that people are recommending. Most people will recommend Corsair power supplies for example. Also when you are about to build a system don't be afraid to post your build on it for people to look at. At the end of the day most people on the forums will be looking to help you. From my experience the PC building community seems pretty tight knit and a world away from gaming forums.


Finally when it comes to components read reviews. Kitguru, hardwarecanucks, hothardware, tomshardware and Anandtech are all excellent resources for component reviews and if a product has 8 or 9 out of ten its more than likely that it will be excellent and you won't have a problem with it. You quickly realise that when it comes to components that are only ever or two worth considering in every price range. Component choice will be covered in more detail in the next article but for the moment here are a few key details. Stick to companies such as ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI for motherboards and graphics cards. Intel and AMD make CPUs. Intel packs more performance, AMD is more budget orientated. Graphics cards are often the most expensive part of a system, a gaming one at least. They also make the biggest difference on gaming performance. SSDs are very fast and very good, buy one.

The Paradox of Chrome OS




While the biggest OS announcement of the week award goes to Microsoft and the availability of the Windows 8 release preview, Google also introduced an updated version of its Chrome OS as well as updated hardware in the form of a Chromebook and the brand new Chromebox made by Samsung. Although reception to both the Chromebook and the new OS have been relatively positive there is still one question that Google needs to answer, why does it feel the need to bring a new OS to the computer market.


Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is Google's browser based operating system that is designed to appeal to those people who merely use their computers to browse the internet. Instead of storing applications locally on the Chromebook Google has designed the OS so that all apps and icons are actually bookmarks, that when clicked take you to the designated application on the web. For example the Twitter icon on the desktop takes you into the Chrome browser and to the Twitter website. However, the inherent problem with basing an operating system on the browser is that without internet connection both the Chromebook and Chrome OS are practically useless.








A Lack of Strategy and the Changing Market

Indeed it seems that after the success of Android Google felt as though it now had the market penetration to enter the desktop and laptop spaces. The problem, however, is it seems to have lacked a coherent strategy from which to build upon. When first announced Chrome OS was “targeted at netbooks”, with “speed, simplicity and security” being the key words used to describe the OS. However, almost two years on from the announcement Google has brought out a desktop version of the Chromebook in the form of the Chromebox. Reminiscent of the Mac mini in size and shape, the Chromebox has the same specifications of the Chromebook but is slightly cheaper. Releasing a desktop version of the Chromebook seems to go back on the statement that Google was targeting the netbook market and hints at the fact that even Google itself may not have a coherent strategy for its newly formed OS.


Delving deeper we see that Google's decision to enter the desktop space with the Chromebox may actually have something to do with the declining sales of netbooks. Last year in Western Europe netbook sales fell 12.8%, greater than the overall decline of the computer market which fell by 11.4%. This was on top of netbooks decline in sales during 2010. The emergence of the Ipad and Android tablets can certainly be seen as a reason for the decline in netbook sales. Upon announcing Chromebooks Google was keen to highlight the extremely fast boot times of the device. Indeed the new Chromebook released last week resumes from sleep in two seconds. Yet while this is impressive, tablets are able to resume even faster than this, are lighter, smaller and carry out nearly the exact same functionality that Chromebooks do. They also maintain some functionality while offline. It seems that Google is hoping that the Chromebox, being a desktop device, is not in competition with tablets and will therefore target a different consumer audience. Yet even if this is the case the Chromebox is an extremely niche product. Retailing for $329 the Chomebox is certainly cheap yet it too lacks much of the functionality you would expect from a desktop device, even one so small. For $599 you can buy the Mac mini that while the same size as the Chromebox is much more powerful and can only be described as a much more useful device. The Chromebox for instance is even unable to act as a media pc as everything runs through the chrome browser. Google has promised that an offline version of Google Docs will be coming to both the Chromebook and Chromebox in the coming weeks. But the fact that this wasn't included for the new OS's update really does seem to highlight the fact Google is unsure of what it wants its new Chrome OS to be. Is it meant to be a fourth computer operating system or is it meant to be an alternative to the touch based operating systems of iOS and android.




The Chromium Paradox

Chrome OS's limited functionality offline causes us to believe that Google's OS is somewhat paradoxical in nature, it seems to be a glimpse of the future in the form factor of the past. An OS based entirely on being connected to the internet is clearly a vision of the future. As more and more people around the globe get connected the the internet Chrome OS will become more viable. Yet, like Google TV, the premise behind Chrome OS seems to be before its time. We are not yet ready to have to be connected to the internet to use our computers. Not only is the internet not widely available at decent speeds in many areas of the world but wireless technology also needs to see significant improvements before we can really use a computer that needs to be connected to the internet to function. Nobody wants to buy a thin and light Chromebook only to be restricted to certain areas of their house because that is where they can get wireless signal. Yet for all the futuristic aspects of Google's OS there seems to be a fundamental misjudgement of the changing times in the hardware space. The market Google is targeting with Chromebooks and the Chromebox are those people who only want to check their emails and maybe do some light perusing of the web. Yet those same people are more attracted to the iPads and galaxy tabs of this world than they are to a Chromebook. Someone who buys a device that looks like a laptop nowadays wants it to have more performance and functionality than a tablet provides and this is arguably the fundamental failure of Chrome OS. It has been implemented in a device that no longer has a place in today’s consumer market, the high-end is now the realm of the ultrabook and the low-end has been cannibalised by tablets.

Google may yet make Chrome OS as success but as it stands it is hard to see it gaining any traction in the market. Netbooks have been largely replaced by tablets and with Google's OS only running on laptops or desktops it seems hard to see how someone who only uses their computer now and again to browse the internet will want to be restricted to a fixed desktop or a slightly less bulky laptop when a tablet can carry out the exact same purpose. More offline functionality is also a must as people aren't ready yet to have to be connected to the web to use their computer. Google's fledgling OS certainly has a lot of growing up to do before it can be seriously considered as a rival to OSX and Windows but as Google showed with android they certainly have the talent to do just that.

Do We Really Need Retina Displays?




When Apple outed the iPhone 4 with its 960x640 screen and 326ppi the retina display was born. Yet as Apple ponders whether to bring retina displays to other devices such as the new MacBook Pro line the question arises of whether we need more retina displays or whether 1080p is a sufficient resolution for screens under 24”.


The Case for Higher Resolutions


People will tell you that more pixels are always welcome as they allow you to see more on the screen at one time as well as making everything look crisper and clearer. Indeed the iPad's resolution bump was met with almost universal claim, with critics and consumers alike declaring that the 2048x1536 9.7” screen to have both crisp images as well as great colour reproduction. Having a new iPad I can attest to the crispness of the image and upon using a friend's iPad 2 the difference really is startling. Clearer text and clarity as well as more screen real estate is the huge benefit of higher resolution screens. Yet there seem to be problems for such high resolution and it could even be argued that they outweigh these rather significant advantages.



Battery Life, Tiny Icons and Gaming Woes

There are clear problems if retina type display resolutions were to become the norm in both laptops and desktop monitors. The first concern tends to what would happen if laptops were to have their resolutions bumped well about 1080p. According to a pcmag article this would mean that 15” laptops would now have resolutions of 2880x1800. With laptops becoming thinner and battery technology not moving as fast as needed surely the battery life of such high resolution devices would suffer. Teardowns of the new iPad showed that it was almost all battery with a 42.5 watt-hour battery replacing the 25 watt-hour battery of the iPad 2. That's a near doubling at the battery capacity in order to maintain the iPad's ten hours of battery life. Apple or any other company would not want to release a new laptop/MacBook/Ultrabook with a worse battery life than that currently seen on current 13” and 15”devices (around 4-6hours). If we were to see such high resolution laptop displays appear than we can also expect devices to become thicker and as well as the disappearance of optical drives, something we are not necessarily ready to see go just yet.


Another problem with having such a high resolution display on a device with a 13” screen for example is that icons will become extremely small and will cause eye strain. Indeed when small screens have high resolutions there can be severe discomfort to the user. One of the reasons that this does not happen on the iPad is because Apple has resized all the icons so that they do not appear too small. This would not be the case for a Windows PC, however, as the icons have a set pixel size for that resolution and therefore by putting such a resolution in a smaller display results in icons and much of the user interface becoming too small to view comfortably.


The final problem with such high resolution monitors, albeit one that won't affect everybody, is the effect the it could have on gaming. PC gaming is an expensive past time without having to spend upwards of £400 on a graphics card, yet if resolutions were to receive the bump some people are expecting then we can also expect to see PC graphics getting worse in order to accommodate for the increased resolution or people will just go back to playing consoles. There is almost no chance that a MacBook Pro would be able to play a game at 2880x1800. Mobile gpus are just not up to that sort of pixel pushing performance yet. Indeed The Verge earlier this week wrote an article detailing how graphics effects had had to be scaled back even on iPad games due to the amount of pixels.



Not Just Yet but Feel Free to Prove Me Wrong


Personally I'm not sure we need to see retina display like resolutions come to laptops and desktops. It is clear that such high resolutions benefit tablets and phones but this is mainly due to the intimacy we have with these devices. That's not to say that I don't think we need to see higher resolutions on laptops however. The current trend of sticking 1366x768 panels on otherwise excellent looking pieces of hardware needs to stop. A 1080p resolution is probably the ideal sweetspot for laptops between 13” and 15”. I currently use a 1920x1200 24” display from Dell on my desktop and I have never once thought to myself that I wish it had a higher resolution. Maybe Apple or another company will show me just how great a retina display could look on a desktop but as things currently stand I'd rather enjoy having my 5 hour laptop battery life and gaming with all settings up at 60fps.

The Tech Behind Ball-Line Technology




With Wembley set to host not only Belgium this weekend but also one of Fifa's preferred ball tracking systems, Hawk-Eye, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the systems that are hoping to become standard across major tournaments and leagues around the world.


Hawk-Eye

Hawk-Eye is the name of both the system and company that uses ball tracking software in order to predict the trajectory of a ball. The system relies on a number of cameras that are used to track the path of the ball therefore creating a 3D image which can be used to show the exact position of the ball. In tennis for example it is used to show whether the ball has landed in or not.

More specifically the system will use six cameras facing the goal at each end of the stadium in order to triangulate the trajectory of the ball and determine whether the ball has crossed the line. Each camera records the action in 106fps which is much greater than commercial TV. Indeed the higher frames per second should prevent instances of where a missing frame on a television replay prevents us from being able to tell whether the ball has in fact cross the line. When determining the position of the ball Hawk-Eye uses two inputs. It takes information of the location of the ball from the six cameras along with the speed of the ball. This information is then processed using Hawk-Eye's software. The most important aspect of Hawk-Eye's system, however, is the speed with which it works. Fifa has stipulated that information must be passed to the referee in under a second . By sending an encrypted radio message to the referee's watch as soon as the ball has crossed the line Hawk-Eye is able to meet this requirement.


GoalRef

More interestingly from a technology perspective is actually the other goal-line technology system that is to be trialled in the Denmark vs Australia game on the same day as the one at Wembley. Developed by the German research and development institute Fraunhofer IIS and going by the slightly less catchy name of GoalRef this alternative to Hawk-Eye uses a chip implanted in the ball itself, along with magnetic fields across the goal to tell whether the ball has crossed the line. Low intensity magnetic fields are created by antennas around the goal area. When the ball crosses the line the chip inside causes a change in the magnetic field. This information is then analysed by a processing unit before the information is sent to the referee. In a demonstration of the technology the signal that the ball has crossed the line was sent in only a tenth of a second, well below the one second demand of Fifa.




Which system will become the norm

Fifa is set to make a decision on goal-line technology on 2nd July with both systems expected to be accepted. The Hawk-Eye system is said to cost around £250,000 to be installed in a stadium whereas GoalRef is considerably cheaper with only micro-chipped balls, a magnetic field and a processing unit necessary for implementation. Although in a sport where players are paid hundreds of thousands a week it is unlikely that price will have much of an impact on which system is adopted by the major leagues around the world. A second consideration over which system should be introduced is the experience for the TV audience. Broadcasters have seen the how Hawk-Eye has enhanced the viewing experience of people in both cricket and tennis and will surely been more excited by the video feedback a camera based system provides rather than a micro-chip. Whatever system becomes the standard across the globe it looks like we won't have to put up with fans' incessant whining about a disallowed goal for too much longer.
